IVECO is pushing deeper into the autonomous future, teaming up once again with long-time tech partner PlusAI to bring self-driving heavy-duty trucks to European roads. The two companies have announced a new program that will see Level 4 autonomous IVECO S-Way trucks hit Southern Europe for the first time, working alongside Spanish logistics firm Sesé and with support from the Government of Aragon.
The plan is to develop two heavy-duty trucks powered by PlusAI’s SuperDrive virtual driver system, capable of handling full autonomous driving in defined conditions. Starting in 2026, these trucks will enter a multi-year testing phase with a safety operator on board at all times. They’ll be put to work on real freight runs between Madrid and Zaragoza, covering a key logistics corridor of around 300 km and offering a real-world glimpse of how autonomous trucking could fit into everyday operations.
“Vehicle automation is a key pillar of Iveco Group’s technology strategy. We are thrilled to reinforce our strong partnership with PlusAI to further innovate our ADAS and ADS technologies on board IVECO trucks. This project will take us forward on our journey to offer customers the highest quality technology for increasingly sustainable transport.”
PlusAI sees the collaboration as a major milestone as well. “Autonomous trucks are a transformative technology that could dramatically improve road safety and reshape commercial freight transportation around the world. We are proud to extend our partnership with IVECO to cover Level 4 autonomous trucking operations in Germany and Spain,” said Shawn Kerrigan, COO and Co-Founder of PlusAI. “Together with Sesé, we’re demonstrating how autonomous driving technology can improve the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of trucking, and strengthen the competitiveness of Europe’s supply chains.”
While fully driverless trucks aren’t taking over highways just yet, this program shows that the pieces are quickly falling into place. With real routes, real cargo, and real-world testing, IVECO and PlusAI are bringing autonomous trucking one step closer to everyday reality.
How soon this kind of technology will make its way to Philippine roads is still anyone’s guess.
