Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation (MFTBC) and REE Automotive Ltd. are joining forces in what could be a major step toward next-generation commercial trucks. The two companies have signed an MoU to explore how REE’s software-defined vehicle (SDV) platform and x-by-wire (XBW) technology could redefine the future of Fuso’s lineup.

Their first joint project is already underway: converting a Mitsubishi Fuso eCanter electric truck into a fully software-defined model using REE’s zonal SDV architecture. Over the next year, both teams will evaluate how the tech performs in real-world conditions and whether it could serve as the foundation for Fuso’s next wave of smarter, safer, updatable commercial vehicles. The results will also help determine whether REE becomes a long-term technology partner.

X-by-wire technology—replacing mechanical linkages with electronic controls—is central to the effort. By managing steering, braking, and acceleration via sensors and electrical signals, XBW promises quicker response, reduced weight, and better efficiency. It also lays ideal groundwork for advanced driver assistance and autonomous systems. Combine that with SDV architecture, where key functions can evolve through over-the-air updates, and Fuso sees the potential for longer-lasting, more flexible trucks with lower operating costs.

“We believe that by combining Mitsubishi Fuso’s autonomous driving and ZEV technologies with REE’s XBW and SDV technologies, we can realize superior logistics solutions. We are very pleased to work together with REE to address social issues such as global warming, traffic accidents, and driver shortages.”

REE CEO Daniel Barel echoed the enthusiasm: “Software-defined vehicles represent a transformative leap, enabling faster development of next-generation commercial vehicles through continuous AI-powered over-the-air (OTA) updates. By leveraging both companies’ strengths, we believe that we have a unique opportunity to set a new industry benchmark for commercial vehicles that support autonomous solutions.”

To test the full package, MFTBC and REE plan to build a proof-of-concept truck within a year, pairing REE’s P7-C electric chassis with the eCanter. MFTBC brings a strong innovation history—having launched Japan’s first mass-produced electric light-duty truck and early Level 2-equivalent driver assistance—while REE contributes its REEcorner modular architecture and REEai cloud-based fleet intelligence.

However, don’t get too excited about this innovative truck just yet; it's going to take some time before the vision of these two companies fully takes shape. In the meantime, you can check out the local lineup of FUSO models on TruckDeal.com.ph.
