Self-driving trucks are getting an upgrade from a new team-up between PlusAI and Goodyear. PlusAI, a company that develops AI-based virtual driver software for factory-built autonomous trucks, is working with The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company to improve safety and efficiency in autonomous freight. The partnership will explore how Goodyear’s intelligent tire technology, SightLine, can support PlusAI’s SuperDrive autonomous driving system.
Goodyear’s SightLine uses sensors to monitor tire health, road conditions, and friction levels in real time. This data can help SuperDrive improve vehicle performance, lower operating costs for fleet owners, and increase reliability in different driving environments.
Founded in Silicon Valley in 2016, Plus has focused on creating a virtual driver system built for heavy commercial trucks. Instead of relying on traditional, hand-coded software, the company uses AI models to develop scalable and adaptive autonomous technology. Its self-driving system, SuperDrive, is made with three layers of redundancy for safety and has already logged over five million miles of testing across the U.S., Europe, and Asia. These real-world operations have helped the company gather valuable driving data to further improve its technology.
In April 2025, Plus reached a major milestone when SuperDrive completed driver-out safety validation. The company is now running public road tests in Texas and Sweden, with more fleet trials planned for later in 2025.
According to PlusAI COO and Co-founder Shawn Kerrigan, the partnership will provide additional vehicle data that will help make SuperDrive perform even better in real-world situations as the company prepares for the commercial launch of factory-built autonomous trucks. PlusAI has been developing its technology for nine years and has tested it in the U.S., Europe, and Asia, covering more than five million miles.
Goodyear Senior Vice President and Chief Technical Officer Chris Helsel said that adding SightLine to factory-built autonomous trucks equipped with SuperDrive will improve safety, performance, and operational efficiency.
PlusAI is also working with major vehicle makers, including the TRATON GROUP, Hyundai, and IVECO, to manufacture and support autonomous trucks. The first SuperDrive-enabled trucks are planned for launch in 2027 in the United States, with expansion to Europe after. While there’s no confirmed plan yet, the technology could eventually make its way to the Philippines. If that happens, it could positively change how goods are moved across the country.
