As the world comes to terms with the electric revolution, there's bound to be a few trucking companies that rise above the rest. The easy guess would be Tesla and its Semi truck, which has tantalized onlookers since being announced in late 2017. While that model has yet to see the light of day, another firm could be bound to take over.

Volvo Trucks recently announced that its next-generation VNR Electric semi-truck is scheduled for production by the second quarter of 2022. That model will feature up to 85 percent increased range, faster charging times, and more heavy-duty transport configurations.

Notably, Volvo first took orders of the VNR Electric back in December 2020. Production began in the latter half of 2021 at Volvo's New River Valley manufacturing plant in Dublin, Virginia. The model has since reached the hands of customers across the United States, allowing Volvo to collect valuable data.

In the Philippines, where electric vehicles (EVs) have yet to penetrate the market, we settle for Volvo's combustion engine offerings, including the FMX range and other truck lineups.

In the US, Volvo has worked to improve its technology and increase the electric truck's efficiency under various operating conditions. For that reason, Volvo has decided to begin taking orders for the next-generation VNR Electric model.

Among the list of improvements include a new battery design with an increased storage capacity of up to 40 percent. There's also a new Battery Thermal Management System (BTMS) for managing ideal environmental temperatures. Volvo Trucks also added a new six-battery package option, upping the VNR Electric's maximum range to 275 miles or about 442.5 kilometers. With a 250 kW charging capability, Volvo also promises 80 percent charge in 90 minutes for the six-battery option and 60 minutes for the four-battery version.

In addition, Volvo has added new configurations, including a 6×4 straight truck and a 6×4 tractor. These join the existing models, the 4×2 tractor, 6×2 tractor, and single-axle straight truck. The new additions should give Volvo Trucks a leg up with logistics companies looking to upgrade their fleet lineups.
