Volvo Trucks North America’s all-new VNL has earned another international award, this time a Silver in the Automotive & Transportation category of the 2025 International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA). The recognition highlights the VNL’s modern design, improved aerodynamics, and focus on driver comfort.

Organized by the Industrial Designers Society of America, IDEA honors outstanding design across various fields, including transportation, technology, and industrial products. Each year, a panel of over 40 global experts reviews entries based on innovation, user benefit, and visual design. Now in its 45th year, the program continues to recognize designs that improve everyday life and mobility.

Volvo shared that the new VNL marks a 90% redesign from the previous generation. The updated look includes aerodynamic lines, a curved windshield, and a wedge-shaped cab, which together help improve fuel efficiency by up to 10%. More than just appearance, the redesign also enhances the overall driving experience, turning long hauls into a safer, more comfortable journey for drivers.

Inside, the VNL is designed to feel like a “home away from home.” The cabin features ergonomic seating, optimized pedal positions, and easy-to-reach controls for better comfort and safety. There’s also upgraded insulation, premium materials, and smart storage solutions. Optional blackout curtains, thermal barriers, and folding bunks make resting on the road more convenient for drivers who spend long hours behind the wheel.

Volvo Trucks said the project started with a blank slate, aiming to redefine the future of trucking through design and functionality. The result is a truck built for efficiency, comfort, and everyday practicality,  earning it global praise and multiple awards.

This latest win follows the VNL’s earlier recognition at the 2025 Red Dot Awards for Product Design, strengthening Volvo’s reputation as a leader in innovation not just in engineering, but in design that centers around the people who drive their trucks.
