Scania is continuing its global efforts to shift towards sustainable transportation with its latest deal in Singapore. The truck maker was able to secure a significant boost, with its first sale of battery-electric trucks in the Asian Market.

This major milestone for Scania was achieved in partnership with the Singapore arm of Berlin-based recycling and environmental services company ALBA W&H Smart City has purchased 15 units of the Scania L230 battery-electric B6x2*4 trucks, after winning a new contract for public waste collection for the Woodlands-Yishun sector of the island city-state.

Each of these trucks comes with a low-entry cab, rear loader, and nine batteries with 297kW hours installed making it well-suited to the demands of collecting waste in Singapore. With the country being home to around six million people sharing just 728 square kilometers of land, it makes Singapore the world’s most densely populated urban territory. Having a clean vehicle that is dedicated to handling waste will be a key factor to help maintain a more sustainable quality of life for those living on the island.

One thing to note is that these trucks will be formally operational by the third quarter of 2022 as these vehicles are still being built on Scania’s main assembly line in Sweden.

Singapore is unique in Southeast Asia in taking such a progressive stand on environmentally-friendly transport. By putting in a specific piece of policy on electrification that in turn creates a market for electric vehicles, the Singaporean Government is really taking the lead in driving sustainable change.

With Singapore being a milestone for Scania, we could soon see the brand further expanding its reach towards other countries in the area. If Singapore proves to be successful with its endavour it could be replicated elsewhere with other countries that need a clean vehicle to help with their logistics or transportation needs.
