Volvo Trucks used Adobe Substance 3D tools and Rapid’s digital twin pipeline to create realistic visuals

Volvo Trucks is taking a new approach to product launches by using digital twin technology to showcase the all-new Volvo VNL in North America. Working with product experience studio Rapid, the company built a full digital system that turns the truck into a lifelike 3D model for use in design, marketing, training, and customer tools.

The new digital twin pipeline covers every stage of the product’s life, from early design to interactive tools like online configurators and virtual experiences. For the new VNL, these digital assets helped attract more attention online, drawing millions of interactions and hundreds of leads shortly after launch.

To make the truck look realistic across all digital platforms, the design team used Adobe Substance 3D Designer and Painter. These tools allowed them to create materials and textures that looked just like the real thing. According to Rapid’s creative team, the system made it easier to reuse the same digital materials across platforms like Unreal Engine, V-Ray, and Blender, keeping the truck’s details consistent and accurate everywhere it appeared.

Rapid’s team shared that the project started from scratch, with the goal of producing a photorealistic digital truck that customers could explore. The new digital twin system made it possible to show the VNL in high quality for marketing photos, training animations, and 3D configurators that let users personalize the truck.

The results show how digital design can improve customer experience and support real sales. Within the first 24 hours of launch, the VNL configurator logged 2.7 million configurations, followed by 320 leads in two days and 1,000 in just three weeks.

Volvo Trucks plans to continue using this system for future launches, combining design and technology to make vehicle presentations more engaging and accessible for everyone.
